Crimping with crimp beads

Crimping with crimp beads, crafting instructions

Crimping is a basic technique in jewelery making that is easy to learn. The crimping is needed, for example, to attach a closure to a piece of jewelry. For gemstone chains or bracelets that are threaded on stainless steel wire and therefore need a closure. For fixing this jewelery clasp we need the crimp beads. How to use it ?
Working with crimps,  you can learn very easily and after a short time you can thread very professional necklaces on jewelry wire and attach a closure like a professional jeweller on the jewelry wire (steel wire).

Crimping the crimp tube together. To do this, we lay the chain long, hold the end of the lock with a pair of pliers and

  • Steel wire, available in different versions.
  • Gemstone beads and cultured pearls or similar.
  • Closure with counterparts e.g. rings
  • 2 crimp beads or crimp tubes
  • 2 silver lenses with a larger hole to cover the crimp beads (does not necessarily have to be)

  • When we have the material set up, we begin by attaching one side of the closure to the wire.
  • Everything is threaded as shown above.
  • It means, we thread 1 crimp bead and then the fastener on the wire to thread the wire back through the crimp bead.
  • If you do not have such a special crimping tool, you can also use flat-nose pliers, which looks a bit different, as shown in the photo.
  • If we have threaded the gemstone beads in the order we like, the silver lens, then the crimp bead and the closure part are threaded first to then go with the wire through the crimp bead and the lens again, making the closure part in one Loop hangs.
  • In order to see no gaps in the chain afterwards, it is important to pull the wire taut before crimping the crimp tube together. To do this, we lay the chain long, hold the end of the lock with a pair of pliers and pull the wire taut with a pair of pliers. Now we squeeze the crimp bead, also called crimp or crimp tube tightly together, as described above. The lens slips over the small crimp bead.
  • The protruding wire is possibly guided through the first gemstone pearl and then clicked off.
  • The closure is hung and our self-made jewelry with crimping beads is ready.

The crimps, which are so-called crimp beads, so small tubes or small beads that squeezed the back slipping out of the Aufreihmaterials - so the jewelery wire - prevent. The crimps or crimp beads, so to speak, take over the role of the knot, as it is made when using pearl silk at the ends of the chain. Crimps or crimp beads have been used for many years, but more and more of the advantages of many types of chains vis-a-vis beaded silk. For heavy chains or chains that need to be produced quickly. Of course, even with very long necklaces, as these usually have a greater weight and of course strengthened by the crafting and making necklaces with real stone beads. Real gemstone beads are made of stone and thus have a very significant weight. Dan are also increasingly used larger and larger pearls and stone beads. All this contributes to an ever increasing use of crimps and crimp beads.
The crimps are either made of real silver, that is, made of 925 silver with 92.5 percent silver in silver jewelry or copper with silver or gold outside. Sogenatte Gold-Filled pearls are also recommended, as they provide the stability of the copper after compression and a surface of quasi-real gold. Gold filled is many times more stable and durable than gold plated jewelery because it is just real gold on the surface. In a simple gilding this almost goes from the look. With crimp beads that are gold plated, it's also hard not to scrape off this gauzy, gold-plated layer, because you have to put a lot of pressure on the crimps to withstand the load.
