Chiastolite - the cross stone
| Chiastolite, also known as cross stone, is a variety of andalusite and is characterized by its distinctive cross pattern. It is often found in Australia, China, Chile and Spain. Chiastolite has a brown to grey color with a black cross-like pattern. The name chiastolite is derived from the Greek word "chiatos" (X) and "lithos" (stone). Other names are cross stone, hollow spar, maltesite, howdenite, maranite, stealite. |
OriginChiastolite is formed by contact metamorphism when magma meets carbonaceous clay shales. The characteristic cross pattern is formed by carbon deposits. |
