Genuine onyx is hard to find. Here it is.
When genuine onyx is completely black, you cannot see it with the naked eye and distinguish it from other types of stone. But this is rarely the case.
Onyx is mineralogically a black chalcedony, so it is not uncommon to see grey grain to transparent translucent areas in onyx.

The real onyx is usually not completely deep black but often somewhat mottled with incisions. 
Stones that are extremely deep black without being extremely uniform are usually black coloured agates or obsidian.
If onyx does not have this typical grain, it does not mean that it is fake. But with the typical grain, the onyx tumbled stone is also visible to the naked eye and therefore easier to recognise.
