Tumbled stones are stones, usually semi-precious stones, which are broken to the size of a hazelnut and then tumbled in a drum, similar to a large washing machine, for several weeks. This means that the stones knock off each other's corners and edges as they turn until they are rounded. To make this work better, polishing sand and liquid are added.
Recently, tumbled stones are also often polished round by hand, for the better qualities. This allows them to be shaped more evenly and gives them a more uniform size. In addition, the polish is cleaner and, depending on the gemstone, also clearer.
